A deeper look inside Semaglutide

What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor. It is the active ingredient in the brand-name medicine Wegovy, including Wegovy injection, which is taken once a week.2
It lowers body weight by reducing how much you eat, likely through its effect on appetite, and it slows how quickly the stomach empties.2
If prescribed, your medication is compounded for you by a US-licensed Section 503A compounding pharmacy. Compounded semaglutide is not Wegovy and is not FDA-approved.
What the research found
14.9%
average body-weight loss at 68 weeks on the 2.4 mg dose1
STEP 1 studied brand-name semaglutide in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, who did not have diabetes. Participants also received lifestyle intervention, and the placebo group lost 2.4%. The trial did not study compounded semaglutide. Individual results vary.1

Your first 12 weeks, step by step
This is a guide to the conversations and decisions ahead, measured from your first prescribed dose. Your clinician sets the actual schedule.
- Before dose one
Confirm your plan
Complete your intake and share your health history and current medicines. If prescribed, review the pharmacy label, injection instructions, and storage directions before using the vial.
- Weeks 1–4
Start at your prescribed dose
Take semaglutide only as directed. Let your care team know about nausea, vomiting, or other side effects. Do not change the dose on your own.
- Weeks 5–8
Review how you feel
Your clinician may keep or adjust your dose after considering your response and tolerability. There is no required increase just because a new month begins.
- Weeks 9–12
Reassess together
Discuss progress, side effects, and whether the current treatment still fits your goals. Your next prescription remains a clinical decision.
Compounded injectables may come in different concentrations. Use only the dose and syringe instructions supplied for your prescription; ask your clinician or pharmacist if anything is unclear. Read the FDA dosing-error alert.
