MK-677 training-claim check for a sports medicine or anti-doping conversation

Write down the exact product, the claim you were given and your sport's testing status, then tick which claims have a direct ibutamoren trial behind them. Take it to a clinician or your anti-doping organization; it is a question sheet, not a training plan.

  • Higher one-repetition maximum, sprint power or endurance

  • A training cycle, deload schedule or nutrition protocol
  • Safety during high-volume or high-intensity training

What the published human data do say

  • In healthy adults aged 60 to 81, a year of MK-677 raised fat-free mass but did not change strength or function.[1]
  • Body weight rose 2.7 kg on MK-677 versus 0.8 kg on placebo over that year, so a heavier scale reading is not proof of stronger muscle.[1]
  • The trial's own authors judged it too small and short to evaluate function.[1]
  • Across studies, FDA's review lists high blood sugar, raised liver enzymes, headache, musculoskeletal complaints, fluid retention and increased appetite among common adverse events.[2]
  • FDA describes most ibutamoren clinical data as small, short and without clinically meaningful benefit shown.[2]

Questions to ask

  1. Does the rule that applies to my sport list ibutamoren, and how do I confirm that for my organization today?
  2. Which result would show a real effect for me: strength, power, recovery time, or only body weight?
  3. Given the glucose and fluid findings in trials, what should I report, and to whom?
  4. How could I know whether the product contains what the label says?
  5. Is there a registered trial I could join instead of using an unapproved product?
