Points from Poison Control and the trials

  • Poison Control: call 1-800-222-1222 or use the web POISON CONTROL online tool.[1]
  • Niacin can cause flushed skin and an upset stomach, and liver damage if an extremely large amount is taken.[1]
  • Iron-containing multivitamins can be extremely toxic in large doses, in children and adults.[1]
  • NR-SAFE gave 1,500 mg of NR twice a day for four weeks to 10 people with Parkinson's disease under safety monitoring; that is a studied dose, not a safe limit.[2]

Call 911 instead

  • The person collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing or cannot be woken.[3]

While you wait for advice

  • Keep the bottle, even if it is empty
  • Do not make the person vomit unless a poison specialist or clinician tells you to
  • Note any other supplements or medicines taken at about the same time
  • If a child swallowed any, call even if the child seems well
  • Write down the time the first symptom appeared
