What the berberine studies found

  • In a meta-analysis, the six randomized trials (396 patients) that added berberine to oral diabetes drugs found fasting glucose a further 0.59 mmol/L lower and HbA1c a further 0.53 points lower than with the drugs alone.[1]
  • Head to head with metformin, glipizide or rosiglitazone, berberine did not give significantly better glucose control. No serious adverse effects were reported, but the trials' methodological quality was generally low.[1]
  • In a 3-month pilot study, 20 patients (34.5%) had transient gastrointestinal side effects.[2]
