MOTS-c
The mitochondrial peptide, by prescription.
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide your own mitochondria make. Since October 2026, US 503A pharmacies can compound it by prescription. A licensed provider reviews you first, then the pharmacy makes it for you by name and cold-ships it to your door.

Understand your treatment
A peptide from your mitochondria.
Most of your DNA sits in the cell nucleus, but mitochondria carry their own small genome. MOTS-c is one of the few peptides encoded there. Research has looked at it in metabolism and exercise, mostly in mice, and US 503A pharmacies can now compound it by prescription.

MOTS-c vs. a metabolism supplement
MOTS-c is a prescription peptide that a provider reviews and a pharmacy compounds for you. Over-the-counter supplements are a different category with different rules.

A peptide your body already makes
MOTS-c is encoded in the DNA of your mitochondria, the parts of your cells that make energy. Researchers first described it in 2015.
Studied with exercise and metabolism
In people, exercise raised MOTS-c in muscle and blood. In mice, it was studied for metabolism and physical capacity.
Pharmacy-made, one ingredient

About MOTS-c
MOTS-c is a peptide of 16 amino acids encoded in mitochondrial DNA, inside the 12S rRNA gene. In mouse studies its main target was skeletal muscle, where it activated AMPK, a cellular energy sensor. Your vial holds MOTS-c acetate as the only active ingredient, compounded by a US 503A pharmacy.
- A 16-amino-acid mitochondrial peptide
- MOTS-c acetate, the only active ingredient
- Injected under the skin or into muscle, as your provider directs
- Prescribed after a US-licensed provider review
Sequence: Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg (HHS Appendix B, 2026).

What the research shows
MOTS-c research is mostly in mice, with early human data on exercise. Here is what it shows.

In mice

Safety and side effects
MOTS-c is compounded by a US-licensed 503A pharmacy and is not FDA approved. FDA has not reviewed it for safety, effectiveness or quality, and human studies are small. A licensed provider reviews your health history and medicines before deciding whether to prescribe it. It is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by anyone under 18. Report side effects to your provider, or to FDA MedWatch at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Common
- Redness, swelling or itching where you inject
- A small bruise at the injection site
Less common
- Soreness at the injection site that lasts more than a day
Seek care
- Signs of an allergic reaction: hives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing
- Signs of infection where you inject: spreading redness, warmth or fever
Human safety data for MOTS-c are limited. Tell your provider if you take medicine for diabetes or blood sugar. Tell your provider about every medicine you take before starting. This is not a complete list of side effects.
